Preface: Undiscovered World is an immersive tech demo showcasing Melba, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions' groundbreaking technology generating Earth-scale world. In this project still in development, see the power of machine learning creating a planet in real-time, generated directly on your GPU.
This demo aims to provide users with an early look at the innovative technology that will power the subsequent titles in the series, and eventually project Artemis. Project Artemis will be massive multiplayer sandbox experience that leverages the technological advancements tested and refined in our tech demo, Preface: Undiscovered World, and Prologue: Go Wayback!, our upcoming survival game.
Overview of the Project
Preface represents an early stage of development aimed at testing the functionality and scalability of Melba. The demo allows users to explore a seamless, dense virtual world while contributing feedback and data that will guide further improvements. This is an evolving project designed for analysis and iterative development.
Key Features
-
Real-Time Terrain Generation: The demo uses machine learning to create complex terrains dynamically, showcasing how Melba handles scale.
-
Local Simulation: All generation is conducted locally on the user's GPU, independent of external cloud services.
-
Waypoint System: Users can create and revisit saved points of interest, facilitating deeper exploration and data collection.
-
Postcard Function: Users can capture and document views within the simulation, labeling and rating images. This feedback supports ongoing content quality improvements.
Continuous and Open Participation
At PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions, we embrace an open development approach, inviting users to be active participants in the evolution of Preface: Undiscovered World and the underlying Melba engine. That why, from launch we are giving community access to our Open Development Roadmap.
We see this tech demo not just as a showcase but as a collaborative platform where users can engage, learn, and contribute directly to the development process. Your exploration and feedback are integral to refining our technology and tackling challenges together. Read more about our open approach to development in the Community Letter.
We aim to problem-solve alongside our community, creating an environment where insights from users help drive solutions and new ideas. For users who need support we offer help with technical troubleshooting, as well as help with how best to engage with Preface: Undiscovered World, and community bug reports in our User Support Hub.
Our ambition is to foster a space where technical minds can connect, share knowledge, and contribute to pushing the boundaries of real-time world generation. We encourage users to join our community in the PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions Discord, where we host talks and discussions with the development team, share regular content updates, and feedback is welcome. The input provided helps guide ongoing improvements and feature development.
